This blog post marks the beginning of the Joulutähti Knit-Along, where we will knit long Fair Isle socks step by step between December 24, 2025 and January 9, 2026. The knitting pattern will be published in parts on the SullaVikat blogas well as in the Sukkasirkus group on the SullaVikat Facebook page.
All parts of the pattern will remain available even after the knit-along has ended, so you can participate and knit at your own pace. In this first post, you’ll find the general pattern information along with an illustration of the finished Fair Isle sock.

Gauge, sizing, and yarn information
The gauge of the sample knit is 26 stitches and 28 rows per 10 cm. With this gauge, the leg circumference measures 35 cm unstretched, and the leg length is 38 cm plus ribbing.
Please note that yarn consumption and final measurements are approximate. Your personal knitting tension, needle size, and the yarn brand you choose will all affect both fit and yarn usage.
With the given gauge, the Joulutähti socks have a relaxed fit and correspond approximately to EU size 38–39.
The recommended yarn weight for this pattern is 250 m / 100 g. Suitable yarn options include, for example, Novita Nalleor Kaupunkilanka Rotvalli. I personally knit the Joulutähti socks using Drops Nord Mix, as I find it pleasant to work with and well suited to my knitting style and this particular sock design.
I recommend using 2.5–3.0 mm needles, depending on your yarn choice and personal tension.
For the pattern, you will need approximately:
110–120 g of yarn for the main color
70–80 g of yarn for the contrast color
Below are additional stitch counts to help you compare the pattern with socks you have already knitted and to assess how it may suit your own knitting tension:
Ribbing: 85 stitches
Leg Fair Isle section begins with 91 stitches
The Fair Isle leg section has 107 rows (!)
At the ankle: 61 stitches
Heel flap: 30 stitches
After the heel, the foot section begins with 73 stitches
The Fair Isle pattern on the foot has 42 rows(You may continue the foot in the main color if additional length is needed.)
